Splash!
The pebble bounced off the surface.
By the time it had sunk, he’d picked up another.
He was called inside before he was able to throw it.

This had become a sort of routine; seeing her. Over the past few months, her skin had dried up and shrank. That didn’t really trouble him. He found it meaningless. She was old, and did not seem to recognize anyone. Yet he went up those stairs and into that room every time he was called. Grudgingly, but he had learned ages ago to hide some of his emotions, to pretend, especially around family.

A few minutes later, he was back outside, his duties done for the day.
It started to drizzle. He walked inside.
It always rains when someone dies.
