Art attack at Rosenthaler platz…. it would have been perfect if google maps was updating their sattelite images yesterday afternoon. This is pretty nice though, regardless.
Mag+ is a prototype for the nextgen magazine. I like the idea behind it, but honestly, it’s about time for an affordable gadget that works as a tablet, ebook reader, magazine, and so on to be made available. Something akin to Crunchpad/JooJoo (without the drama), or Courier (maybe without the microsoft?). Something I can browse the web with, check my emails, read ebooks and newsfeeds, take a few notes, make some simple sketches and so on… until then, I guess I’ll have to do with sexy concepts and rough prototypes…
The ladies at Double X magazine decided to try to go through a typical work day like the boys from “Mad Men”. I’d like to try that too, sometime.
True story, but it might as well be a Mitch Hedberg joke: Stewardess, right after Cptn. turns on seatbelt sign: “ladies and gentlemen, it is now 6:30 pm San francisco local time. the captain has informed me that we will be landing at 7:20, so in around 30 minutes. therefore, I would suggest you all get up and move around a little. actually I just noticed the seatbelt signs, so don’t. that will be all.”
Digg apparently has started using Cassandra (a structured key-value store) as an alternative to MySQL for some of their features. MySQL is pretty much the standard for a wide range of large SNS (including Facebook, Flickr, and Digg itself). As someone who’s done his fair-share of work scaling, federating, sharding, and doing other -ings to databases to speed up and optimize large amounts of data for web applications, it’s interesting to see where this experiment leads to.
note: Cassandra was originally developed by Facebook, released as open source in ‘08, and is now an apache incubator project. Don’t you just love the web?
Nature composed the music. This guy just wrote it down.

Terrorist leaders have called the incident a "wake-up call." "No one likes to see a senseless waste of a willingness to take human life," said al-Qaeda operative Salih al-Shimiri, in a videotaped message aired on Al-Jazeera Monday evening. "However, there are worse problems than having too many suicide bombers on our streets."(August 20th, 2009, 0)
